The world's largest hotel chain, this company started with an innovative idea by Kemmons Wilson, the founder of Holiday Inn. The Memphis, Tennessee-based company started in 1952, when Wilson dreamed up the idea for a hotel chain while on a family vacation in Washington, D.C. Disappointed with the roadside hotels that he encountered during his trip, he opened the first Holiday Inn in Memphis along the main highway to Nashville. After the success of his first motel, Wilson partnered with Wallace E. Johnson, and the two built four additional motels on the byroads to Memphis.

Five years later, Wilson turned the small motel chain into a franchise that he called Holiday Inn of America. By 1958, he had succeeded in expanding to 50 successful motels throughout the United States. In 1972, Wilson had opened over 1,400 Holiday Inns throughout the world, and he was honored for his hard work and entrepreneurial spirit by appearing on the cover of Time magazine. By this time, some of the motels were more like resorts. Ideal for families with children, many of the motels boasted indoor pools and adjacent dining establishments.
