The Hoover company is founded on a classic story of American ingenuity. In 1907, Murray Spangler was a night janitor and an inventor in his free time. He also had asthma, and found that sweeping up dust at night was aggravating his condition, so he set about trying to find a solution. Using a fan, a pillowcase, a tin soapbox, and a broom handle, he fashioned an awkward contraption that he called a suction sweeper. It was funny looking and unwieldy, but it worked and he knew he had a potentially revolutionary idea on his hands. His wasn't the first vacuum sweeper, but it became the most successful.

Unable to produce the devices himself, Spangler sold the patent to W.H. Hoover, who owned a leather shop. Hoover's unique marketing plan led to the company's success: He offered 10 days' of free use of the Hoover vacuum cleaner to anyone who wanted to test it. To get the units to these potential customers, he set up a network of local stores to distribute them and offered the storeowners a commission on any sales. More than 100 years later, their distributor network remains a crucial part of their sales. In 1926, the beater bar was added to the design, drastically improving the Hoover vacuum cleaner's efficiency. The slogan was, "It beats as it sweeps as it cleans."

The beater bar is still a part of most Hoover vacuum cleaner designs, although it has evolved with new technology and materials. Hoover developed the first disposable paper vacuum cleaner bag, the self-propelled feature where the beater bar helps pull the cleaner along the carpet, a front headlight to help see under furniture and into dark corners, and a side-mounted hose. Today Hoover is owned by TTI Floor Care North America, based in Glenwilow, Ohio. They remain a leader in the floor-care industry and maintain a comprehensive line of vacuums for personal and industrial use.
