Kona Sports traces its roots back to 1969 when Mike Sciarra was building surfboards in his family's garage on the Jersey Shore at Wildwood Crest. He'd started surfing Atlantic waves when he was just twelve years old. He later got a business degree from the University of Hawaii, while also learning the art of shaping and glassing surfboards from North Shore surf masters. In 1970 the first Kona shop was opened. Mike shaped and glassed the boards in the rear and sold them in the shop out front. They also carried some O.P. Cord walk shorts and a few Hang Ten trunks, and not much else. Within a decade they were also carrying ten-speed bikes, a range of surfwear, and footwear. While the surfboards aren't made on-site anymore, they're still a huge part of the KonaSports.com business—along with body boards, skim boards, and skateboards.

Mike, his wife Dee, and longtime manager Tony still run the retail store in Wildwood, New Jersey, and now manage KonaSports.com, too. They carry a full line of equipment and accessories for surfers, skaters, boogie boarders, and beach bums.
