Petco began in 1965 as a mail-order veterinary supply business. Originally called UPCO, or United Pharmaceutical Company, its first store was opened in La Mesa California in 1976. At that time, the company sold pet and veterinary supplies to both veterinarians and the general public at discounts prices. Spurred by the great success of the first two store locations, founder Walter Evans changed the company's name from UPCO to Petco to better reflect the store's products in 1979.

The next year, the first PETCO opened in Tigard, Oregon. The company had already enjoyed modest success, but a financial milestone occurred in 1988 when the company purchased two pet supply chains, which tripled the number of Petco stores. By the early 1990's, Petco became the largest pet specialty retail chain in the United States, with 218 stores in 13 states.

Today, Petco has over 1,000 stores in all 50 states. In addition to offering pet food, supplies and training materials, Petco has an animal-grooming center, a customer rewards program and dog training services offered in all stores. While the company went public in 1994, it returned to private ownership in 2000 due to a depressed economy. Although the company suffered economic setbacks, it remerged as a leader in pet supplies with a new website, and expanded its retail locations. In 2004, Petco formed a partnership with the San Diego Padres with the opening of Petco Park the home stadium of the baseball team.

With over forty years experience as a national pet supply retailer, Petco is a household name for veterinary professionals and the general public. The company formed The Petco Foundation in 1999, and has since raised over $34 million dollars to support thousands of non-profit animal healthcare facilities throughout the United States. Additionally, Petco founded the "Think Adoption First" program in 2004, which encourages adopting rescue animals rather than purchasing a new pet.
